Integration of Information for Research and Education

Not only the supply of scientific information is in flux, but in general the universities are in flux as the application of up to date Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will strongly influence developments in education. ICT will allow new forms of learning, in particular of distance and lifelong learning, and these will have a major impact on the economic conditions under which universities will have to operate in the future.

ICT opens up new options for the learning and teaching processes resulting in a change from primarily the transfer of knowledge to the student to primarily the development of knowledge by the student. The integration of (communication and information for) research and education is key in this development.

The main functions in communication of research and educational information will be discussed against this background. Their organisation will be analysed using the creation of the DINKEL Institute at the University of Twente as an example.

The integration of information for research and education will change the value chain for the information system at large. The consequences for strategy and structure will be analysed.
