Google Apps for Education

Samantha Peter, Google Enterprise

Google Apps for Education represents our belief that any academic institution, from a neighborhood school to an international university, can become a more effective learning community through "converged communications" – one universally available access point for the entire community to communicate and collaborate. With Google Apps for Education, you can provide your students with the communication and collaboration tools they need to manage their academic careers effectively. The architecture of this solution is very simple because Google Apps is delivered through the Software as a Service model, which requires no hardware of software on-site at the school or university. In this solution, users and administrators would connect to the Google services through the Internet. As this hosted service is offered at no cost to universities and educational institutions, this removes the burden of deploying and maintaining these services internally.

Google Apps includes the following tools, all of which are accessible through a browser from any location. Google's Gmail is an innovative and easy to use AJAX based email service with 2GB of space per user. This interface also incorporates Google Talk, a convenient way to keep in contact with other students by text and voice. Posting classes, lectures and other events is quick and easy with Google Calendar. Students can be invited to key meetings, browse and sign up to activities they're interested in and create their own team or personal calendars to stay organised. Working with other classmates for group projects has never been easier with Google Documents and Spreadsheets. Sharing and collaboration has been designed from the start to allow information to be built in co-operation with other students in real-time. Combining all of this is the Personal Start Page which allows each student to customise the content on a central web page and delivers access to all the services you provide. Students have the same experience whether they access the services from a shared computer room running Microsoft Windows or at home on their own laptop running Linux. Redundancy, load-balancing, capacity and server maintenance is handled by Google and its distributed architecture. Managing deployed software and hardware is now almost eliminated as new features and updates are applied automatically. Secure access is provided to students over any Internet connection, with one set of credentials controlled by administrators. Online user support and documentation is always available and administrators have 24/7 phone and email access to our support engineers.
